9 Steps to Help You Know Where to Start When Renovating Your House

It may not seem like it, but soon the weather will warm up and home renovation projects will begin. It can be fun to tackle a home renovation project. But it can be hard to decide where to begin. To help you to decide where to start, I’ve compiled a list of 9 steps to help you know where to start and what to focus on first when renovating your house.

9 steps to help you know where to start when renovating your house. 1. Design and Planning Start with a plan. Decide what projects you want to do and create a plan. This will help you develop a budget and know who to hire. 2. Roof, Foundation, Water Issues, Siding, Windows The large projects should be done first because subsequent projects will be impacted. 3. Structural Carpentry Next consider carpentry that is in support of other work such as drywall, new or moved walls, windows, doors, etc. 4. HVAC Ductwork, Electrical, and Plumbing After structural carpentry focus on services that need to be installed when the walls and ceiling are open. 5. Drywall Next, close up the walls with drywall: hanging it, mudding it, and sanding it. 6. Windows After the walls are completed focus on new or replacement windows. 7. Fine Carpentry Now you can focus on the finishing touches: carpentry that is not supportive: baseboards, molding, trim around windows and doors, built-in elements (bookcases, breakfast nooks, etc.). 8. Interior Painting, Wallpaper, and Other Surface Finishes One of the final details to consider is painting interior walls, hanging wallpaper, painting molding and trim, staining and sealing trim. 9. Flooring Install your flooring as late as possible in the renovation process. It will save your flooring from damage as a result of other renovation.
